How to expand dvr storage help

I am looking to expand my dvr storage and the cable company said to plug it into the esata port. i have an older western digital my book(has alot of pics on it) but the hook up is mini usb to usb and is probably 2.0 not 3.0. is there a way to use my current one till i upgrade to another one. or one that has an esata port on the actual storage unit. what exactly my best option?

are there cheaper alternatives to the actual storage?

or could i still use it as an actual storage for something else also?

I don't know what format the DVR formats the drive as, so I would not know if you can use it apart from the DVR.

Who is your cable provider? Might be able to look up what format they use. It's probably FAT but it could be anything.

My cousin works tech support for them I'll ask ask him and see if he knows. He just said get a portable and get usb to esata.adaptor
