How to find out which OS is installed?

I can't boot up one of my XP Home systems (missing .dll file/ damaged boot file). How would I find out which SP is installed (I need to know this so I know which XP CD to use for repair install)? I can access all the files on the HDD if I hook it up to the PC I'm on now.

use the disk with the highest service pack. If you only had sp2 and install sp3 in repair mode its ok. The true is same in reverse order, just be sure to reinstall service pack 3 when it is back up and running.

Thanks for the reply. Ya I figured out after making this thread that I don't really need to know which SP is installed. If SP2 is installed I could do a repair install with my SP2 disc with no problems. With SP3 installed I would need to slipstream SP3 onto my SP2 disc because I don't have a SP3 disc to do a repair install with (I read that SP2 disc won't work on SP3 system).

I have succesfully repaired instalations with Windows XP SP2 disks, on systems that were running SP3, butI would immediately install sp3 once it booted up.

Sometimes after the repair of XP wether it has SP1 or SP2 when you attempt to manually install SP3,sometimes it just hangs forever and you can't install it.So your best option is to slipstream SP3 and perform the repair with that disk containing SP3.

Cheers!
