how to get aim to work?

i connect to the interent using a cable modem.
how do i set up aim so it works, it keeps saying it cannot connect.
i don't sign in to anything i just click internet explorer to get on the internet and my sister said i need to sign in to something like an isp but i don't have one
my cable is through charter if that helps
 
in AIM, under preferences, go to sign on/off and choose connection then a box comes up and there will be an autoconnect button. try that and it will try and find the right port to connect through.
 
if it doesnt most likely ur firewall is blocking it and just look around in the options to find what port aim uses on ur comp if u want to be more safe or just go to ur firewall and let all of aim through to be less safe and a lil morwe faster to configure
