so i have a laptop here, the drive is not booting up properly, I dont want to format the drive and lose all the data on it. Does anyone make a device that would let me use a laptop hard drive in a desktop computer? I just want to be able to boot up the computer with the laptop hd as the slave, is this possible?

The most common option for a 2.5" laptop drive is the external usb type drive holders where you can browse and retrieve files from it once it is seen with the OS on the desktop. Being usb limits using a live for cd type of Linux distro that can easily access MS partitions whether Fat16, Fat32, or NTFS like that seen with NT, 2000, XP, and now Vista.

Another alternative would be a possible use of 1394 firewire to see data transfer between laptop and desktop if the laptop was up and running. The external usb drive holder seems to be the best option.

Buy an external USB case for the HDD, I use one instead of a memory stick at the moment.

Simply stick the hard drive in one of these cases, then plug the cable that comes with the case into the HDD and a USB porn on the PC (You may need a cable with 2 end or to use the ports that feed directly into mobo as sometimes it cannot get enough power). You can then browse to the files as if it were a memory stick.

Ohh cases you can get off ebay for like £5 - £15 or $10 - $30

For seeing that drive slaved directly to another inside a laptop is generally out of the question since there's no room for two drives like you would see in a desktop. At one point I thought there were 2.5 as well as 3.5" to 5.25" drive bay adapters while the external usb drive bay would be the best option there. The other type would be for seeing normal not recovery application there.

Where can you order from? newegg, TigerDirect.CA or another vendor? If that's a sata type 2.5" driive there you can look over external usb drive cases like the one seen at http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=32426&cat=19

That would be Serial or Parallel ATA there meaning sata as the term goes or EIDE type. The second there won't work for a sata model if that is what the portable came with. Whether or not you go with the one seen there at least you want the correct one for the type of drive there.

("gee? this won't fit. why? aw crap ordered the wrong thing! GGrrr...!" "oops!")

Hmm yeah kinda dont listen to my post its worded wrong.

Pretty much check the connection on the back of the HDD

If its the whole length of the HDD get an IDE case
If its a small section slightly smaller than an inch get SATA

The typical sata type plug seen on cables that come along with the boards themselves will look just like what is seen in the image here. As you look at the rear of the drive casing you may also see a typical molex power connection as well as jumper depending on the make and model sata drive. The older Sata 1 type would see that.

The make and model of laptop could also help here since the specifications will not only show the make and model drive but the type installed. Or at least you can easily go direct to the drive's manufacturer for detailed information you may need for other things. Sometimes that can be a hlelp in selecting the external case you will go with as well.
