How to increase net access speed?

Microsoft Windows XP Professional gives the following information
on Qality of Service in Packet Scheduler:

Determines the percentage of connection bandwidth that the system can
reserve. This value limits the combined bandwidth reservations of all
programs running on the system.

By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the
bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the
default.

If you enable this setting, you can use the "Bandwidth limit" box to
adjust the amount of bandwidth the system can reserve.

Specifies the maximum number of outstanding packets permitted on the
system. When the number of outstanding packets reaches this limit, the
Packet Scheduler postpones all submissions to network adapters until the
number falls below this limit.

To change the default value of 20 percent, you have to follow this
procedure:

Click on Start, goto Programs, goto Accessories.
Click on Command Prompt
Type gpedit.msc
Under Computer Configuration, click on 'Administrative Templates'
Click on Network
Click on QoS Packet Scheduler
Double-click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Check on Enabled
Change Bandwidth limit to 0 %
Click [Apply] [OK]

It may not improve file downloading, but it certainly gives improvement
in accessing encripted pages like those in email accounts. Improvement
can also be found if the site contains many icons or image files.

I'm sorry could you please be a bit more clear as to what you want to do? Did you try that and it did not work?

And there really isn't anyway to increase the bandwidth (other to buy a better plan), yes you can make minor tweaks to the connection but that dosn't really do much.

this is an old trick, and it's complete rubbish, by default i think it is something like 20% of the bandwidth coming into the Pc that windows reserves for itself, meaning you cant use it at anytime, change it to xero and you supposedly get 100% of it all the time.

In short its just rubbish, it doesnt change and tbh, who cares about 20% when most of us are on 8Mb+ lines to begin with

Emperor_Nero - he is not asking a question, there is nothing to be answered, and IMO there is nothing to comment on either, its pretty pointless

windows doesn't reserve any speed....

my connection runs @ 602-603KB/s all day long on a 5mb line which is ~95% of my line speed, and factoring in normal loss, is pretty good.

I don't use XP *sarcasm* I am a hard core Mac Gamer, duh!

I have XP and tried it and it IS NOT RECOGNIZED.
You might want to double check that, and then you might want to go fix the little problem you have, gpedit.msc is a key part of WinXP, its a group policy editor and is fairly important, if you're XP cant find it, thats not really a good sign

Oh and just to let you know, gpedit.msc typed in from cmd prompt DOES WORK (yes, im not the only one who can type in capitals either...)

Will I get in trouble if I increase my net speed?

I recently read a previous thread on how to increase your net speed. Well I want faster net speed without having to move up to a business package. These are the steps:

"Microsoft Windows XP Professional gives the following information
on Qality of Service in Packet Scheduler:

Now if I do this will I get in trouble? When I did this the box said not configured so even if I do this will it effect my net speed. Like any information would be greatly appreciatd.

ohh yeah I want to do this my old computer that is running Windows XP Pro

The described method works in Windows XP Professional only, I mensioned
the description of it in the first line.

Since it is connected with 'Quality of Service' in the operating system,
it is logical that a change in the setting is supposed to show some
effect. Whether you take it as some thing important or as a minor change
is left to the individual.

Users of XP Home can copy the file 'gpedit.msc' from a friend's PC and
try. But I am not sure how effective it will be.

Those who are using fast ISP lines may not care for 20% bandwidth.
But this is a general forum and there will be many user having slower lines.
My suggestion was intended for them. In my PC, I got nearly 50%
improvement in accessing my email account.

To answer your question, no.

To broaden on it, as said in the thread; unless you have the lowest possible broadband connection and will really like to try, go for it. The only way you can increase your internet speed is through your ISP.
