How to increase PC performance?

How often do we have to do Defragmentation and registry cleanup?

Is the default Windows tools for the above is enough, or is it better to install other tools to increase the PC performance?

Tools like norton, ashampoo,...

If you defrag every 1-2 weeks, that would be easily enough.

I use Ccleaner to clean up my temporary files, caches, and basic registry cleaning. I am on XP, so I assume it works for Vista as well. Unsure what is out there for Linux users.

ccleaner is good (yes, works in Vista)
Registry mechanic is also good (not free though)
Adaware is alright for adware
norton...shudder, use Avast or something similar instead.

Those are the only programs I use. Everything else is built into windows, like disk cleanup, startup program modifier, and defrag.

Modern file systems like NTFS, HFS+, ext2, ext3, reiser, etc, do not really fragment that much, unless you are dealing with ginorumous hunks of data (like files that range over 50 gigs a piece) so really defragging will not really optimize your HD to begin with because those file systems already optimize them self on the fly.

Adding more RAM, making sure you have enough free HD space, cleaning up the reigstry (only applies to windows boxes), rebooting your computer every once in a while, making sure you are up to date, and not having billions of processes running in the background.

I defrag whenever I install something large (FSX, Doom 3, etc.) simply because the program will run and load faster.

I use O&O Defrag 2000 because it's free and compresses the files more than the windows one.

Defrags and reg cleaners will help as they said but, the major thing is your startup and running apps! To check startup of apps go to run command and type "msconfig" and click the startup tab and from there you can uncheck programs that you DONT want to startup on system startup/logon. Also you can uninstall un-needed programs. You could also do some registry changes if you know what your doing! I DO You can also disable un-needed services by typing in "services.msc" in run box. Here's a couple of sites with tips and intructions on how to some things! These websites are focused on Vista but most tricks work on all windows operating systems!

Not to mention using a active and up to date anti-spyware program to keep the bad programs from installing inside your system, which slows things down even more. Sound kinda redundant to mention it, but when i am helping a friend with their computer, it seems like there is a lack of protection on the computer.

I use Spysweeper 5.5 w/Antivirus. No problems at all.

For Antiviruses, get rid of Norton. Norton = system hog. Go for Avast or AVG.
