How to know if other users are using the wlan?

We are about 10 people here in the building, sharing a wireless internet connection. Is it possible to know if someone else is using the connection or not. (The linksys router is not connected on my computer...)

Check your Network page. It's a page that can be linked on your start menu. Also found on the navigation pane on Windows Explorer windows below your Favorites list, Libraries, and Computer.

It should show all devices (computers, Xbox, media centers, network bridges, switches, etc) that are connected on your network.

would it not be smarter to authorize a mac addy with encryption for each that is using it. its a no brain'er.

Sorry, I think my question wasn't clear :

I want to know if one of the 9 other allowed users is using the wlan.

I'm doing a lot of downloads and they complained I'm slowing down their connection. In respect to them I would avoid big downloads if someone is using the wlan.

And the linksys router is connected to someone else's computer. Tell me if I'm wrong but I think that the Network page wouldn't show the other devices since I'm not the one who's sharing internet to the others.

I think it's 20 Go. The 9 others don't want more (pay more).

Anyway, if it's possible to know if others are using the wlan, it would be fine... Is it possible?

20 Gig is meaningless when 10 people are hogging the bandwidth and the guy may end up with some serious bills.

Any way as far as I'm concerned only the guy who has the router can see who's hooked into his network.

Are you able to login to admin console of the router? If so, you can see the active connections there.

You need the id and pw then try going to http://192.168.1.1 or possibly 192.168.0.1. It depends on the router brand. What router are you using?

If no one changed the default often the id=admin and the pw is blank or admin.

Once you get logged in to the admin console look for Status->Wireless or something similar.

It will only show the IP addreses of the computers connected, not username.

Here's a link that shows what default userid/pw is for various linksys routers: Linksys Default PWs

It's entirely possible though that whomever setup the router changed the defaults (which should always be done but often isn't).
