how to make a .gif file from a video?

what programs do you guys use to make a .gif file. I have a really short video clip that I want to make into a .gif file and wanted to know how to do it, and what programs I'll need to do it.

I have made .gif files with adobe image ready with still pictures, I just need to know the steps on how to do it from a video clip. Thanks

I use this amazing programme called "gif movie gear" you can make your own gifs or turn a video clip into a gif file at the click of a button aslong a it has no protection or some weird stuff on.

Thanks alot, this worked best for me cause I already had all these programs, and was really easy to do. Thanks to everyone else for their replys too.
