I just bought a new computer (laptop actually) and i was to make a boot disk. i researched but it seems there are so many options. I just want a disk/cd that will boot up windows xp incase any files have been corrupted. Can someone give me a step by step rundown of the process

Do you mean make an XP Recovery CD, so that if something goes wrong you can restore your computer back to the original state?

If you have a corrupt system file, you can use the original XP CD to replace the corrupted file using Windows ASR (Automated System Recovery). If you dont have the original CD, you can try a program such as Norton Ghost, which will make an image of your entire hard drive/partition, so you can restore it to that state if something happens. You can get a trial here.

what i want to do is Partition the drive so i have one logical drive for data using partition magic 8, but reading how to do this, the author said he had corrupt boot files

"I've been a long time user of Partition Magic and it has always served me well until recently. For some reason I've yet to determine, on several occasions while applying changes to a partition scheme using the latest version of PartitionMagic the system has rebooted and failed to restart due to corrupted boot files. I've been unable to replicate the behavior on any consistent basis but I do know the only times it has happened is during PartitionMagic use. "
