How to make unallocated space into new drive?

I have a 3TB hard drive. Windows only recognized 2 TB of it. So I have some space left over. When I right click on the unallocated space, it doesn't allow me to create a new simple volume. So what do I have to do to use that space?

Unfortunately, any drive over 2tb will not be recognized by windows unless you are running a motherboard that has a UEFI bios. You can try using gparted to convert the drive into a GBT partition like a couple members did here at this link.

Thanks for the link.

So let me see if I have this straight:

1) I have Windows 8 64 bit
2) I do NOT have UEFI mobo
3) Windows 64 bit can not boot off of a GPT partition drive

so...

4) My 3 TB drive is effectively a 2 TB drive.

correct?

:(

Correct. Though you can read the post John linked and see if that works.

If I remember right Without the UEFI BIOS he can't have the system drive over 2tb but what if he loads windows on a small partition and has all of his files on the other partition like how a lot of us are using SSDs? Would that let him have a partition over 2tb?

I'm not sure if that will work. He can try reinstalling windows and make 2 parititons. Could make a 1 tb partition and install windows and then partition the balance. But he might end up in the same situation now where it won't let him partition the balance.

I am pretty sure that his system can address a 3tb drive just fine. It just has a problem with Windows being installed to a 3tb partition. So if he installs Windows to a 30gb partition and has the rest as another partition he should be able to use the system fine. It will be more work to set up but I think it should work fine.

I just built this computer yesterday and installed windows today. I would have no problem reinstalling windows again. Would I just put in the Windows installation CD and do it again and wipe the entire thing? And then when I get to disk drive, make a partition (one with 1 TB and the other with 2TB)?

After researching a lot today, I'm pretty confident my computer won't be able to recognize anything bigger than a 2 TB partition because I don't have a UEFI mobo.

Yes your post is correct, when you get to the drive options in windows setup create 1 1TB partition and 1 2TB partition, install windows to the 1TB partition.

:)

How do I restart windows from the cd? When I insert the CD it goes straight to setup, but doesn't give me the option to restart windows from the CD.

It should support the 3tb natively, meaning nothing needs to be done in order for it to work correctly. However, look in the bios to see if there some setting that needs to be enabled.

Maybe I clicked something, but during my five or so hard drive wipes and windows rewrites, I was never asked if I wanted MBR or GPT... which lead to the problem I am currently having.

However, I think I may now know why it wasn't supported. When I went through the windows 8 installation, when it said where to install the copy of windows to, I never clicked on the hard drive and then click new and allow it to partition it as necessary. I always just clicked next without clicking new on the hard drive. Maybe that is why it went to MBR by itself.

Anyways, I am currently reinstalling windows again, and this time I had clicked format hard drive, and then clicked new. A popup came and said it had to make several partitions for everything. I clicked OK and now I believe the full hard drive is being used.

In about 5 minutes I will update and say if I have my full hard drive or not.

Well, usually on a big drive like that, users will partition it into 2 or more drives. Like I said before, you could make a 500gb or whatever you want windows partition and then the balance as a data partition. Or depending on what types of data you have, you can make one partition for pictures and one for music.

OK I have my 2.72 TB hard drive yay! Thanks for everyone's help :)

John, I like one big hard drive lol! I hate having to go through different hard drive letters and things like that. Much easier for me with one hard drive location :)
