How to organise drives on IDE cables

Currently I've got 1 HD and 2 optical drives (1 writer).

I plan to add another small HD where the OS will live keeping the existing HD for data only.

What is the best usage of the IDE buses for performance?
Both HDs on one and both opticals on the other?
Or should I mix them some how?

New HD will have 8MB cache
Thanks
Alan

you will get mixed views from people on this, some say to keep the writer on the same channel as your data HDD as this increases speed, true, but it also decreases the theoretical cable usage due to the two devices crosstalking on the same channel the whole time... in my opinion i think its fairly even, i would probably go with this setup though

Pri Master - CD Writer
Pri Slave - Data HD
Sec Master - Operating System HD
Sec Slave - Normal CD

Here's what I did:

Primary Master: C hard drive (OS and programs)
Primary Slave: D hard drive (data)

Secondary Master: E DVD/CD combo burner
Secondary Slave F DVD-ROM
