How to partition disks in Win 7?

I just bought a new Sony VAIO laptop, comes with 650GB HD but in reality it's more like 600GB. I was wandering how I can resize the C drive (it only came with one drive)? I only need around 80-100GB in C, and the rest in D drive where I store all my non-system files. When I go to disk management, it says I'm only able to shrink C by 300GB, leaving it with approximately 300GB, and I don't need that much space in C. It mentions something about "can only shrink up to the point when it meets an unmovable file". What does that mean exactly and how can I partition C? Thanks.

Im not sure but suggest you defrag the drive. goto explorer right click the drive then properties, tool tab and defrag. May have to do more than once. this should tighten it up. then try what you did. that should clear up more space. this is the way i did it. Might want to leave maybe a 160 for primary.

I tried defragmenting (now it's 0% defragmented), and it still says the minimum space for C is 300GB... this is really odd as I don't remember having this problem on another laptop I bought around half a year ago (HP, also 640GB).
