How to recover a stolen laptop?

My laptop was stolen. I filed a police report and learned that there is in fact a pawn section at the cop shop, however they will not recieve my report for 7 to 10 days. Ill be driving to pawn shops a lot on my own. The manufacturer said that my particular model has technology imbeded it that allows it to be tracked if its online. I will call them and inform them, hopefully the thievin bastards will try to update it at the HP website, but they'll probably wipe it. So if anyone hooks it up it can be tracked. The problem is that the cops are supposed to track it but I dont want to wait the 7 to 10 days for them. Im wondering if there is anything I can do to track it down, online, offline, however. Believe me, I would love to find out where my laptops new residence is. Any ideas would be appreciated.

if your manufacturer says it could be tracked... then they are the ones i would trust... as for you tracking it, i would say it's damn near impossible...

Isnt there some software that you can download to track it if it is online? I would like to put something like that on mine just in case.

you don't sound horrible, just uninformed. there is a sort of "low jack" system for recovering laptops. if someone were to go online with it, they will be found.

I have a Fujitsu T-Series that has that feature but I believe it is a service that has to be turned on and paid for on a monthly bases BEFORE the laptop is stolen, but I could be wrong

heres what to do... if by any chance you remember the
IP address of the laptop, you can track it if it is online at that moment by finding out where it is connecting from, it is called 'pinging'.
open MSDOS (start>all programs>accesories)
now type (tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xx) x being the ip address.
it will give you a list of all connections the computer is using.
if you give all the information that appears to the police i can imagine they miht be able to do something about it
