How to remove password

I just received this IBM laptop that was thrown away at my work. The problem is that I don't know what the password is. It's running Windows XP Pro. Is there some software or something to remove the password? The farthest I get is to the login screen?

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Matt

Can't you get in as a guest or something? I think you can disable it from in there, or something related to that.

never know if you dont try! I don't think it'd work, because it'd see it as two different Editions of XP, and try to do a new install. Or tell you that you shouldn't downgrade XP editions.

S.O.L.....Also, I was trying to do a Repair on XP SP2, and you have to have the administrator passoword in order to do any repairing. In turn, this little trick wouldn't work.

All you need to do is run safe mode, log in as administrator providing it dont have a password and then remove any passwords via user accounts in control panel.

yea john is right, on my pc this is how i done it, hold f8 when boot screen comes up, then it should say like do you want to rune windows, safe mode, and some other stuff, pick safe mode, then do exactly like johnb35 said.

u can boot into safemode and log in as Administrator (usually left blank). Once in as Admin u can change the user's password to whatever u want.

i'm not sure.
I had situation a little bit different,

So did u get in? Oh we live in the same state :D
Sorry it took me so long to respond but I have not got in yet because I needed a AC Adapter for the laptop. (The battery ran down). As soon as I receive the AC Adapter in the mail I will try to log in on safe mode.

I finaly got the ac adapter in the mail today!!:) The safe mode trick did not work because I did not know the admin password. So I tryed this: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and it worked like a charm. This is the easiest way to hack in to an XP computer (even with SP2) if you do not know the password!! (I'm even writing this post with the laptop)
