how to tell if network comprimised (sniffer)

I've been reading how someone can send you a sniffer so they can capture passwords,ect... from your computer. Is this possible, and if yes how can I tell if one has been installed on my computer??

I've tried netstat -an to see network connections but can't really tell from that. Can anyone offer some advice or suggestions. Thanks

First thing I'd do if I thought my computer was infected would be to run my antivirus software and my antispy/adware program (Sypot Search and Destory's a good one, and it's free to download off the net!).

Delete all your cookies and temp. Internet files. In Internet Explorer you can do this by clicking Tools>>Internet Options and then hitting the the buttons that say "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files". Many passwords that you use on the Internet are stored in little files known as cookies. It's best to delete all your cookies when you've finished a broswer session, however it does mean that you'll always have to enter your passwords on all your favourites sites everytime you visit them.

Also, a great idea is to protect your IP (Internet Protocol) address from hackers and sniffers. Do a little bit of research and read up on IP addresses (if you don't know much about them) and then go out and download a free version (or paid if you want, ;)) of a program like "Hide IP Platinum". Effectively, what it does is protect your computer's unique identity by tricking other computers and programs into thinking that you're someone else. It's hard to explain, and hard to understand if you've never heard of it before, but it's well worth it! Trust me. :D

I hope some of this has helped!

Thanks,
I have actually been thinking of using that program but in tne meantime I learned how to manually chnage my ip and have been doing that.

I have also run virus check and everything was ok. There was a small chnace that maybe someone I knew wanted to get my passwords so it freaked me out thinking when they sent me 2 files (good ones) maybe they tried to sneak something on my computer and I didn't know if there was any other way to check in case it didn't show up on thew virus check.

these are not called sniffers
sniffer are programs that the attacker use to get passwords and information sent to your computer or your computer sends
this is called man in the middle attack and changing your IP wont prevent it from happeneing (don't panic in most cases the attacker has to be in your LAN or wireless range)
anyway
about the files sent to you
these are called backdoors, trojans, spyware, keyloggers or whatever
just do a little scan, there are free anti-spyware every where
adaware is a good one also the one mentioned in the last post
and then you will be fine
