How to tell what's running?

I have a Dell laptop, Vista SP1. Occasionally the hard drive light flashes as it does god knows what - is there a way to see what is going on when the hdd light is flashing?

Usually all this disk activity is happening from background tasks
Go to Control Panel Tasks, and see howmany things are listed, and what you'd like to disable
Defrag is one of those tasks in Vista that starts by itself, as well as indexing files
I tend to disable as many startups and tasks as possible though ;)
