How to Test Laptop Drive

One of my friends had an Asus ROG laptop that has apparently consumed its second hard drive. It originally had a 1TB drive then was replaced by Best Buy with another 1TB Samsung Spinpoint Momentus drive. It crapped out again and I recommended he buy a 750GB WD Blue and sell the laptop, which he's going to do. I now have the Samsung drive and want to hook it up to my computer and figure out if it works or if it's fixable.

What can I use to test it or possibly fix it?

Seatools will test samsung drives. Seagate took them over a few years ago. Run the dos version.

Ran the longest test on it and it said it passed. I can get the partition manager of Windows to see the drive but Windows Explorer doesn't see it at all. The drive also show up in device manager.

Edit: Was able to assign it a drive letter in disk management and it popped up as connected. So I guess it works now?

Yes, that was gonna be my next suggestion. If the drive is empty you usually have to format and assign it a drive letter. But if it already has data on it, windows should automatically give it a letter.

Well I figured a different friend would have some use for it more than me. His 200GB HDD on his laptop was filling up fast so I reinstalled Windows on the 1TB for him and he's using that now. Seems to be working fine.

Does SeaTools actually fix problems with a drive or did I just make my other friend waste his money to replace a perfectly working drive?

Well hopefully that's what it did. Regardless, I have 2 friends happy now so that's good. Thanks.
