How to update BIOS

Hi,

I want to upgrade my BIOS to solve a possible hardware problem.

I do have a floppy drive but I would need to plug it in.

To update the BIOS is it better to use a floppy, bootable CD or a program in Windows? Any links?

Could you give me some step by step, steps (:P) to do this please as I have never done this before :)

I heard if it went wrong I could break my motherboard and make it un-usable?

Thanks.

It's extremely rare for something to be wrong with the BIOS, most of the time any sort of error would happen if you tried to flash the BIOS to a different motherboard or even revision, or if you turn your computer off during the flashing process.

If one of those two things happen, you most likely will be out of luck unless your motherboard has dual BIOS's, which I highly doubt.

Unless you download a bad copy or have a bad floppy(slight rhym there) the most common mistake is being off by a digit when typing in the bios version. You will want to make the bios is seen at the root of C and you have another copy of it on the floppy itself. The option to backup the current version is also an option. The main problem I think you are seeing however is software while making sure you have the lastest or last version of the bios never hurts.
