How to use an ISO file

I want to be able to use an ISO file just like any other file to view and use it. Do I have to "mount" it using a program like alcohol? I keep reading about "virtual drives" and such. Can't I just use the ISO file without having to drop it on a DVD?

Thanks in advance to all who help.

Alcohol allows you to mount an .iso file as a virtual optical drive.

This basically tells the computer that the file is a CDROM or DVDROM and allows it to read it as if it were an actual disc running in a drive.

This can be useful if one has a video game, say, that requires the CD to be in the drive when playing.

Thanks, but is there a way to simply use the ISO file as a regular file. For example I have an ISO file of all books that I just want to access and read without all the mounting etc. Can I do that?

you can extract (take the individual files out of the iso) iso files using winrar or 7-zip, I recommend using 7-zip, it's free, or you can use magicdisc to mount the iso file.
