How to use shortcut keys for ascii characters without a num pad

Hi. I am taking a class where one of the exercises is to create a table of ascii characters such as daggers and such, and list the shortcut keys to produce them. I just found out that the symbols only are displayed if one uses a num pad to enter the shortcut key numbers, and I don't have a num pad on my laptop. Anyone know of any other way I can do this? Thanks!

here is a picture of a laptop keyboard which is much like my old one. if you look at 7,8,9,u,i,o,j,k,l, on the keyboard, they have secondary numbers under them, which is a makeshift num pad. you can engage them my hitting the "fn" (function) button, or by hitting num lock. im guessing your lappy will have something like that. at least thats how it was on my old lappy, but my new one (17") has a full num pad :)
