How to wake it up

Now I have another problem, this time with my wife's computer. It is a Dell, maybe 10 years old and running Windows 7. The trouble started with,
Preparing to configure Windows.
Do not turn off your computer.
Now it is saying'
Failure configuring Windows Updates.
Reverting changes.
Do not turn off computer.
This message has been on the screen for several hours and I can not get any action out of it. I tried a crash stop on the wall plug but nothing has changed.

HELP.
 
Press F8 before the windows boot screen and try to enter safe mode and do a system restore.

If that doesn't work, try F8 again but select Repair Your Computer. Follow the prompts the select the advanced repair and try doing a system restore from there.
 
This happened to me when it was downloading all the updates at once after a fresh install. I fixed that by selecting around 10 updates and installed them, then repeated this until it was all installed. Not sure if this is the case for you though.
