How to wipe the hard drive clean of porn pop-up and viruses

I have this older laptop with the hard drive completely corrupted with viruses .. u get nothing but porn pop-ups when u try to log to the internet and all other functions and programs are disabled as well.

Anyway, I know very little about hardware / software. I called Best buy and they charge like $150 to clean the drive and than I need to buy the windows OS to get it going! The laptop is not worth spending any money on and I want to use it as a project laptop


My questions are:

1- Anyway I can clean the hard drive without having to remove the windows OS. I don’t have a disk for it and I don’t want to purchase one.

2- If no, how difficult is it to wipe the hard drive clean, and install like a Linux OS (or any other free OS . .if there is such thing!)

wow .. that seems to be an easy task!!!

So, do i still need to wipe the hard drive before installing Ubuntu? or will it automatically wipe the hard drive clean as it is installed?

If i need to delete the hard drive, how do i do it?

We do offer free help here, at least it was that way last time I checked :D
To start, please do the following:

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.


  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

NOO DONT! They wan't you to install a NON WINDOWS operating system. You would lose windows xp/vista. Unless you wan't that don't do that. If I think what you're saying is "I want to wipe that bad stuff off my hard drive", than try installing a free virus scanner like AVG and buy one like kaspersky or norton. You can scan and delete the viruses.
 
First, listen to GameMaster and do that. He will help get rid of the major crap on your comp, which should essentially speed it up. And also, the help is not free :P nvm yes it is :D
 
Well i tell you what i listened to what people on here were trying to help me with getting rid of a trojan horse because it would bring up uall kind of pop-ups, and everything they said worked. So i think it depends on what you really want to do so...:cool:
