Ok.
I'm buying a laptop with wireless Ethernet.
I want to know how to get internet into this laptop which will be going into my room when the only available internet is out in the family room on a wired desktop.

I don't want to split the bandwidth, or have to buy my own internet service.
Is there anyway to do this?

Do know that I'm good with computers, but not that good.
So answers with straight-forward and simple terminology would be appreciated.

Are you asking how to setup a home network so you get internet on both the
computers?

You need a Wireless Router. Connect the dsl/cable modem to the router, then run a
network cable to the non-wifi desktop. And then use the wifi on your laptop to connect
to the router.
