I'm quite puzzled at how wireless antennas on routers work. I recently installed a D-Link Dir 655 wireless router which has three external antennas. I replaced the middle antenna with an extra 7dbi high gain antenna that I have, and had notice a dramatic decrease in wireless range and speed. This quite puzzle me because I thought the high gain 7dbi antenna is suppose to improve both range and the speed for the wireless connection? What was even more surprising was that if I just keep two antenna and remove the middle one, the range and speed for the wireless actually improve! Just wondering if anyone can tell me how these antennas work, and if they are able to explain this phenomenon!
