hows this computer looking...

For one many software commonly run on an XP system will not run or even install on one of the Vista versions. While most games themselves seem to be able to install easy enough sound drivers are rather scarce besides beta versions at this point.

I see you switched brands of memory to Corsair from your first list. I do hope the software and drivers that come with the sound card are "Vista ready"? I had a few BSODs here lately trying to get the EAX and other things working. Creative currently only has beta drives for the older models seen.

I have to say I am rather annoyed at the quality of Vista drivers. But I guess it is a new OS and these things take time.

Don't use the "let Windows search the web" option when trying to update drivers by right clicking on anything seen in the device manager anytime soon or... crashola! When tried here with the SB Audigy 4 Pro I ended up with "two" Creative models seen installed! The SB Live SE somehow got on. When using the Media Center's own "simulate EAX" option "memory dumping" was seen on the BSOD as the system locked up!

SB Live SE was successfully removed upon that discovery with a "audio console" instead of EAX console shortcut created for the EAX effects. A pleasant wav file type voice when double clicking on the effect later says "access granted" as you then hear the echo effect like being in an auditorium.

The video drivers for ATI and NVidia are readily available however. They made the latest catalyst and NVidia updates are Vista ready. I can't answer on Pine or other makes of sound cards and sound drivers for different makes of boards. But I know Creative models(except maybe the X-FI series) are seriously lacking support at the moment. When you start seeing new games and other Vista geared apps come out then Creative will probably be playing catchup there.
