HP/Compaq Presario

The Pavillion line would be the better product by HP. HP simply reworked the original Compaq thinking with some improvements. The main problem with the model here is that it runs a Socket A not 939 type cpu. Why pay retail for a system that is outdated. Lately vendors have stopped even carrying cpus less then a Socket 754 model. This is the drawback with the model there.

no wonder there selling it for soo cheap, soket A, if i were to buy it i wouldnt be any better off then what i currently have (metaphorically speaking)

If you are going to go retail to get a new system why pay that kind of price for something already years old in the computer industry. Most people generally want to invest in a system that will last a few years. If you don't know how to build your own and have to buy a complete system retail shop around for the best price. Socket A at this time is out. I'll be putting a new build together soon enough to replace the case here. Hopefully Opteron powered.

ok u gotta think about it this way yur paying for parts when u build it yurself, when u buy a premade system yur buying it as is put together and everything

processor $130-$1300
video card $199-$700
sound card $50-$400
motherboard $40-$250
hard drive $200-$500
disk drive $30
DVD burner 200
dvd 30-100

On some things your figures there are a little too high but not far off. You can grab a new single cored cpu at some vendors like the AMD64 3000 for under $145-. I spent about $180- for the Atholon XP3200+ 32bit cpu in late 2004. The latest but not necessarily needed high end video cards will run above $200 easily while for basic occasional gaming you can shop around for less. A good sound card about $70 with a WD 250gb eide drive going about $130 or less while on sale. Floppy drive even cheaper then $30-. A new dvd burner can be had for just over $100 in a retail store. Prices have fallen there.

my figures are actually really close, i may have rounded the prices to the nearest tenth, but the processor for example it will go up to $1300, plus im in toronto ontario, canada and dont forget im not including the 15% provincial tax

With locality and taxes in mind you still should be able to keep overall expenses down by price comparisons and maybe even a bundle package where you can save here and there at times. And yes even the new AMD Opteron line sees a good price here. You may want to look around a little before deciding to at least get a system that can easily be upgraded at a later date to save costs now rather then going for a deadwood model that will leave you stuck in a bind fast. The best cpu for an AMD Socket A was the 400mhz fsb Atholon XP3200+ that supported dual channel mode on the older boards. Socket 754s were strictly single channel leaving a good S939 model even with an AMD64 3200+ cpu now would work out better then an older now outdated "SOCKet-IT-TO-ME-A" eh? :P

well the computer that i was looking at with dell is a vista capable computer so in the near future i can upgrade to vista, 4gig ram and i beleive its a LGA 775 socket

Ummm, 15% provincial tax? i live i Ontario too, its not that high! lol 7.5% provincial tax, 7.5% Federal tax. 9or is it 8 and 7...i forgot, i know in québec it is 7.5 each...)

I'll spend a few bucks more to get into a new and better build rather then this one that is now on the 3rd cpu, 3rd video card, 2nd sound card(the 1st crapped out), and even the 2nd pair of dimms(memtest discovered incompatibilty with supposed matched pair). When the time comes probably a little sooner then thought a jump over S754 to a S939 board works along with a pair of 1gb if not 2gb perfomance diimms, an MSI not ATI video card this time around(There's a scrolling horzontal line when at a game's menu that wasn't seen on the 128mb MSI card but is on the current 256mb ATI model).

yah man its 15%, 7% GST and 8% PST so 7+8=15 or 7.5+7.5=15 which everway you look at it. havent u ever noticed when you buy something for 1.00 and theres tax it goes 1.15 or if it .99 it goes 1.14
