HP desktop prob

Hello everyone, I am having a problem with my computer. I have never fixed or built one before but would like to learn how to fix and upgrade this myself. Here is the computer http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...foCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3644689

Little less than a year ago the hard drive failed. It was taken to a computer store and they replaced the factory samsung hard drive with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=1ve11xqvgh6u8 Everything else is factory. I had to get HP to mail me the OS window vista disk and the computer store loaded that into the new hard drive. It has worked fine till now.

Now the computer will not bring up a disply on the monitor. The power button lights up and I can hear the fans running but nothing happens on the monitor. Its used to come on when I would just move the mouse. I hooked another computer up to the monitor and it works fine so I think the monitor and cables are good to go.

I think the mother board is bad. There isnt a video or sound card so it must be built into the board.

I would like to fix and upgrade this myself. I think the processor I want to use is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=e7ilu4scijo9

Maybe this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=1ruby4k2csm4t

Maybe this memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=jdvi2t56pvey

If these are bad choices please make a recommendation.

Will all of this work together? Will it fit into the case? Do I need to do anything with the hard drive the computer store installed or the OS? Do I need to upgrade the power supply and if so what do you recommend? Do I need any other materials like heat paste or spacers for the board? Will the computer be faster with all this?

Am I wasting time and money and should start from scratch? I dont play any high graphic games but may want to in the future. I just search the web, watch videos and play games on sites like pogo. Any help would be great!

1. Your link don't work to what HP computer you have. Just tell us what model of HP computer you have and I can look up the specs for it.

2. Have you tried resetting your cmos by removing the power cord from the power supply, removing the cmos battery, press the power button on the case a few times to discharge any remaining power, then wait 5 minutes. Then reinsert battery and reconnect power and try booting up.

3. If you are wanting to build then you need to start from scratch basically. You really don't want to use an OEM case.

I fixed all the links. The computer is a HP a6300f.

I took everything apart and cleaned it all out. So power cord was disconnected and power was turned off for awile.

I dont know where the battery is. Thanks

The silver round item circled in red is the cmos battery in the picture. You have to remove it in order to reset the cmos.

As I said, unplug power supply, remove the battery, press the power button on the case a few times. Then wait 5 minutes and reconnect everything and see what happens. If it still won't boot up then something else is wrong.

But as I said before, if you want to build a new system, you will need to start from scratch and if you give us what your budget would be, we can configure a build for you.

I did everything you said and it still doesnt work. If I turn the monitor off and back on it says vga input- no input signal dvi input-no signal input.

$400 budget, can I save the new hard drive and keep the OS?

$400 won't be enough to build a system as you won't be able to use the OS as its an oem license. You would need a new copy and thats $99 by itself. And if you want to be able to play decent games then you would need to get a decent video card which will run you $150 or more depending on the type of games you want to play.

Ok thanks for the quick help.

Lets build it without the graphic card for now if possible. I can add this later correct?

So lets say with OS new budget would be $500.

if you need a system @ 400, we can do that. You can save up and get windows, and a video card later.
Just to be sure, your in the USA, correct?

and by saving for OS, you can use a Linux distrobution in the mean time. Something like Mint 11 or Ubuntu 11.04

you will have to make that list public before you can share it with us.

I got this setup picked out for 396. Could upgrade to better parts if you were willing to go to 500 and add a video card and Windows later.

you would still need a DVD drive thats around $20.

Can you see my links now?

Our final price is close to the same.

The board you chose is half the cost of mine.
I chose 4gb Ram and you chose 8gb.
My case was $40 and yours was $60.

I cant see the power supply you chose for some reason.

Thanks

well fm1 on die gpu's aren't necessarily gaming level, more like entry level, about equal in performance to a 70 buck gpu, so you will get some decent settings out of it.

i couldnt find out through spell check how to spell discrete (still says its wrong), so I said gaming.

Either way, its going to out perform a HD4200.

that and he wants to save for a GPU, but linked a board with no IPU. lol.

that's why you add it to the dictionary, discrete is correct, if you want proof then go to newegg and it should shouw that on some of the 6450's or something.

Ok changed the hard drive and psu in my list above. I left the board blank until I figure this out.

Will I be able to watch videos with the board you chose or would I have to wait until I got a graphics card?

Is there a board with built in video and sound that can have a graphics card added later. I may never use the computer for games but would like the option to be there.

What processor do you recommend? Sorry if I missed it earlier!

if it can fit into your budget, get a Phenom II x4 with on board.

Otherwise a FM1 like linked has a pretty powerful (for integrated graphics) GPU on it.

Either way, you can add a GPU later. Just be sure that your PSU can support it.

Ok I think we are set! Thanks for all your help!

Just to make sure this build can do everything this computer did http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...foCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3644689 better.

Can you look at all my links in post #11 now that I changed things around and make sure we are good it would be appreciated.

This build will cost as much as the HP did. How much better will it be?

Do I need anything else like cables or heat paste?

I hope to order all this tomorrow.
