so i know speed is dependent on the slowest link in the chain, would the following specs (ram speed, hd speed, etc) be optimum? or can i go with a slower processor, say a 1.7Ghz

also, what is the difference between shared video memory and dedicated?

thanks for the inputs..

shared video ram is usually video that is onboard or integrated into the mainboard. So if the video uses 128 meg og ram, it is taken away from the main system ram. So if you had 256m of mainsystem ram and your video ram was 128 meg, you would only have 128m of system ram left. Usually how much ram the video uses can be set in the bios.

so a system with 1 gig RAM and 128mb shared video ram is still better than a system with 512mb and 128mb dedicated video ram, correct?

I suppose so , there is more ram left over, I think you may be able to increase / decrease the size too in the bios. 128 meg of video ram isnothing today, especially if you are going tp play games. You may want to look for a mainboard that does not have an embeded video and buy a sepoerate vid card. There is a new format, that I can not recall, newer then AGP. If you are not going to do video intensive stuff then the mainboard should be ok. you may want to post this question in another section here that is gaming or strictly video. I do not do that much gameing though I have installed some new vid cards and they can get up to $300 - $400 + just for the video card alone.

Is this a notebook ? You might want to check other notebboks. I think that might be the norm for notebooks in that price range. As long as you do not use it for intense graphics. dedicated is better in the sense that a Cadillac is beter then an Impala.
