HP dv5000 Grim reeper on my tail

HI all. Guess I'm a real greenhorn in this company. Did build one box once. Got an Intel board (D865 PERL), and stuck stuff on it till it worked pretty good, with help.

My old HP Pavilion dv5000 notebook is telling me its pretty sick:

"Back up data...Disk 2 ST 9120821as-(S1)...failure coming....

XP pack 3, Verson 2002, (registered), Intel (R) CPU 1.66 GHz, 1.49 GB RAM

I did put most of what I think I want to save on an 8 Gig flash drive. This Pavilion seems to be working fine. Have pressed F1 to boot (as now always prompted), a couple dozen times. Am using it now.

I bought a supposedly Seagate refurbished drive on Ebay, shipped for $31. My question here is can I remove my current drive, install this new one, take a stab at installing an OS, then remove the new drive I'm experimenting with and reinstall my current drive and expect it to continue to work same as it does now? In other words, can I pop one out, noodle with another one, than put mine back.

Wouldn't hesitate with a desktop, but I'm not so sure about this notebook.

Thanks, Don

If the drive is failing, you need to replace it. Download and run seatools on the drive to test for errors and it may be fixable but usually not.

Thanks John, I'll give seatools a shot. I have a replacement drive sitting right here, still sealed. I live remote, (online via cell modem). Was hoping that I could do the switch, then stick this original back If I can't get it back online. I have the 2.0 usb host controller. (just realized I should copy that from the flash drive to a disk!)

Thought somebody might know if this HP notebook is gonna have a fit if I start swapping drives like that. The notebook makes me nervous, with a regular box I would have tried it by now.

Well...that takes a while. Burned the ISO disk, ran the whole mary-anne. Says I have an error. (a5a8e262 for warranty). Explains it can write in "O"s and use spare space. Nowhere, anywhere I looked, in help or anywhere else does Seagate tell you where to go to do it. There is "contact us" info....

If the drive that is bad came with your laptop then the warranty would be through HP, and that lasts only 1 year unless you bought an extended warranty. If so, then you are forced to get recovery cd's and then buy a new hard drive and then reinstall windows.

I think I said clearly twice I have a replacement drive here.

I'm only asking if the fine people here think I can give it a go and then put my original back.

***I'll remember you always, goodby.

Yeah, you can put in the drive and fiddle with it and then put your original drive back in but it still won't work correctly cause its got errors on it.
