Yeah yeah I know its an old system :( . Got a free hp dv6000 problem is it was wiped clean and I dont have a installation disc for it. What can I do to get it up and running. Right now im on my desktop running windows 7.

What license does it have on it? I'm assuming it's a Vista Home Premium key.

If there's no key anymore and you don't want to purchase a new copy or use illegal version, you can always go with linux.

Yeah well if he decides to go the Linux route on a older HP it is best to list hardware, if there is a old enough AMD and radeon card this may not be a best option either. I only bring this up since HP produces a huge number of AMD Radeon notebooks.

Sorry guys been a hectic week. Anyway tag says windows xp media center edition 2005. Didnt think computer was that old but beats my dell from 2000 lol. I dont need anything great just for email and keeping track of my forum chapter thats it. Anyway I can copy my windows 7 off my desktop and use or no?

The license is attached to your desktop so when you put it on your laptop you will be running on the 30 day trial from MS until either it runs out or you buy a new license. Not to mention if it is 64 bit Windows depending on your notebook hardware it may not be a good idea to run a 64 Bit operating system.

you could transfer your Windows license from your desktop to your laptop but then you will lose Windows on your desktop.

If you are running a Intel based cpu with integrated graphics then I would recommend 32 Bit Xubuntu 12.04, if you have a 64 bit cpu with over 2 GB of memory then I would recommend 64 bit Xubuntu 12.04.

That doesnt really help at all as I use my desktop more than the laptop...

Sorry man that is called proprietary software, it is your choice to use such. I offered a option of using Linux which unless your gaming can do pretty much everything Windows can do and even gaming is becoming much better on Linux.

Linux is open source which means you can download as many copies as you want and install them on as many computers as you want...

The code is open to use and alter if need be and free of charge to use.

What one should I use? I've read ubuntu is pretty decent. I just want something that is simple and wont make my computer slow. Never used it before.

Pretty much for basic things. Checking email, taking care of my forum chapter. Maybe watch a movie or 2 on it every once and awhile. Don't need it for gaming or constant movie watchin

Xubuntu is the same thing as Ubuntu, but it uses a less resource due to the lower resource hungery desktop so it will run faster. Typically machines from the XP era we recommend Xubuntu. If you have a 1 Ghz cpu and 1 GB of memory then you could get away with installing Ubuntu 32 bit ans it would run pretty well. But Xubuntu 32 bit will still be faster, it is a personal choice.

Linux is different then Windows is design, it is considerably faster then Windows while being able to support older and modern hardware and the latest open source software. The security in Linux is un-matched to Windows, you should set up a firewall but Anti Virus is a choice and I have not ran any AV on any machines since I started using Linux back in 2008.

If you have any question regard to which version of 32 bit or 64 bit, how to burn the image, installation question or once installed how to do something post and their are several of us who are quiet good with Linux and have been using it some time.

Well got it all setup pretty much. Thanks! Only problem im having is wont connect to wireless. Do I need to download that driver maybe? If hardwired in the internet works just no wireless.

Got a bunch of stuff but what I determined is I have a broadcam bcm4311. My wireless light is orange not blue like it should be. Doesnt matter what position my switch is in.
