HP ENVY 5540 PRINTER

Hi all!

I am posting my Printer question here because I didn't see a Printer category at first glance. If I am wrong could someone please move this and let me know?

My daughter gave me an extra printer a few months ago that she wasn't using, and I had thought I had hooked it up correctly until just recently. It's an HP ENVY 5540 printer. My desktop is an HP All-In-One 24" PC with Windows 11, and I am using Google Chrome as my browser. I am also using Microsoft Office 365 and everything is up-to-date.

I have already printed some pictures and some Word documents and I thought everything was OK until recently. Just the other day my wife asked me to print some insurance forms in a PDF format but I couldn't. My Envy printer was not being offered as one of the ways to print the document in the drop down menu options provided.

So is there a way that I can reconfigure my printer so it will print ANY types of formats? Do I need a different driver? My daughter said she would come over and fix it, but she is always SO busy that I don't expect her to get to it until the Christmas holidays six months from now. Perhaps you can help me.

Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to your reply!

If your printer is offered then sometimes there is an option to add printer in the drop down so that it shows up. IF not, make sure that the printer if installed on your pc by going into printers and verifying it shows up.

Hi johnb35,

Good to ear from you again! There was no option to add printer in the drop down that I recall. I will check that if you want me to. Yes, my HP Envy printer is the only one I use and it shows up. However, I don't know why it says it was last used in February of this year when I just used it last week.

One more thing.....

I just tried to print a PNG downloaded picture that I use during the summer as a desktop background. I wouldn't print this PNG file either as it says "No printers found." What the heck is going on?

See in that picture where it says "add a printer"? click that and see if you can add that printer to the list. I've had to do that on a clients pc once. Other than that go here and see what is listed.

Your printer should be listed there. If not, that could be a reason why its not showing up in the list.

In my screenshot above it says "Add a printer" but when I click on it nothing is listed.
On my page below it says to "Add device" so I tried that beause the lower Envy printer listed says "Driver is unavailable". After clicking on Add device it says it's connecting but after it finishes it too says Driver is unavailable.
Incidententally, I also tried to find my page again like the one you posted with all of your devices showing ,but I don't remember how I did that. I do remember that only my Envy printer was shown along with my mouse and PC(?)

OK I am having lots of trouble installing the link you provided. The instructions were very confusing to me. But, I finally got to a point where it says:

I tried the "Tap Here" link but nothing happens.
So what now? I uninstalled my printer like you said so now I don't have a printer.
Please note that I will be leaving here at 3PM Pacific Standard Time but will be back tomorrow at 10:30AM.

OK, I think we are making progress thanks to you. I am now thinking that I somehow was able to download the link because now when I tried to print my Summer background picture again my printer was being shown. However, there was some language in red and I don't know what it means. All I know is that it wouldn't print.

My Envy printer is now listed (not like before), but it also now says "OneNote (Desktop)" and I dissabled OneNote a couple years ago because it was affecting my Microsoft Office 365.
And it's still not printing.

johnb35?
So what now? How do I get my printer to print? What did I do or am doing wrong?
I used the link you provided: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-envy-5540-all-in-one-printer-series/5447939 and it was really hard for me to do. So many questions that I had no idea what they meant. But, it "seems" like I got through it (maybe not corectly) but as you can see my Envy printer is now showing up in the drop down menus. It is also now listed among my start menu items again, after uninstalling the other one. But it still won't print!
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks, Mark

Try unchecking the box where it says let app change printing preferences. Other than that, try printing an email or something. Without testing it myself, couldn't tell you what is going on but at least its properly installed now.

Hi johnb35!
Thanks for the reply! I had thought that you had maybe given up on me.
OK, I unchecked the box that says "let app change printing prefferences" and I was able to print an Email as you suggested with no problem. But, it still won't print my PNG Summer background picture. What's up with that? And, what does it mean that Borderless printing was changed from ON because of a conflict? Is that why this page isn't printing?

And one more thing unrelated to this problem: How do I get this page below? I looked at my page like this yesterday, but now I don't remember how I did it.

Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply.

OK, while waiting for you to respond I think I may have solved the problem about my printer not printing my PNG Summer background picture. Like you had suggested to uncheck the "let app change printing preferences" box, I also unchecked the box on the bottom left of this page below and this time it worked just fine.

So, at this point I am feeling pretty good that you have helped me solve my problem once again! SO THANKS JOHN!
Finally, can you please still tell me (step by step) how to access this page?

Once again, thank you so much for helping me with my HP Envy 5540 series problem!

Thanks johnb35,

I was just curious because I opened that page myself on this PC right after I started this thread, and now I can't find it. I don't really need it for anything, but it just bothers me that I can't find it here on my Windows 11 like I did just a few days ago. If you know the steps to find that page on Windows 11 then please let me know. Otherwise, like most everything else, I will probably stumble upon it later. :)

Once again, thank you for helping me to get my HP Envy 5540 printer to print again!
