HP "gaming" desktop won't boot (Windows 10)

My 11 year old nephew said he was trying to log in but it said the credentials were wrong then next thing you know it reboots and tries to auto repair. The automatic system repair always fails and we get brought back to advanced options menu. Tried lots of things from the web not to no avail. I have a recovery media (usb) for Windows 10 that can allow me to reset the PC and keep files (but lose apps). I am reluctant to do this, as then his games have to be reinstalled. Please help.

Wrong credentials do not break a Windows installation. I'd guess you're not getting the full story.

If the startup repair when booted off the flash drive doesn't help, probably time for a new install. Games are easy to redownload and most save files are backed up to the cloud anymore anyway. Can always yank the drive and hook it up to another machine to pull data off if needed.
