HP Keeps shutting down

Restart your computer Safe Mode, by pressing F8 before Windows starts (More info HERE)

Then once logged in go to My Computer
Right click on C drive > Properties > Tools > Check Now
Select the top box "Automatically fix errors..."
Select Start button > Yes > Restart
Wait for CheckDisk to scan and fix any errors
Hopefully Normal Mode then loads ;)

If you cannot get to Safe Mode, you can also run CheckDisk from the XP CD Recovery Console
Boot from your XP CD
Select the first "R" prompt
log into your Administrator account (which is "1" then "Enter")
On the command line type: CHKDSK /R (note: 1 space after CHKDSK)
Press enter key, and allow the scan (and Fix) to complete
Type Exit, and restart to Normal Mode (note: take the Windows CD out)
Hopefully Normal Mode then loads ;)

More then likely the notebook is overheating due to the fan and /or the heat exchange is clogged with debri. Try a can of air, blow in the air in the exhaust. If it helps , the notebook should be dissasembled down to where the fan and heat exchange can be fully cleaned.

That was my first guess but it stays on while in safe boot but shuts down before the logon screen on normal boots. Over heating wouldn't be that selective

a few years back when I used to do residential pc/network repair. I remeber a pc that was infected with WINFIXER, very nasty virus,,,starts out as a free internet virus scan...anyway this guys desktop did the same. Could be other issues too...could be ram, try memtest86 ..or one stick of ram at a time. Also look in event viewer system log.
