HP Laptop worth it?

I've been hearing some really bad things about HP laptops recently, but I saw a laptop online that looked great and was a good price too. Here it is:

Does anyone who has experience with HP laptops have any suggestions about whether it's worth buying the laptop and if the HP horror stories are true?

My Mom has a Hp going on four years old and running fine with Windows Vista SP2. My family has had some good experience with HP other then there tech support. I have heard some crazy stories on this forum though about HP.

I personally like Sony Vaio computers, decent battery and performance and a great quality.

I've got a HP.
It came pretty much for free through my school.
It's now cost us over $800 in repairs, on a laptop that's worth $300.
Never again.
