Thought i would give this ol girl some life again , It currently runs win98 se , I would like to run linux OS on her, any recommendation for which distro please.

assuming https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/F2340WT.htm is somewhere near to what you have, then you are not that limited.
I would go for Crunchbang, PClinuxOS, or puppy linux. really any minimalist distro would run well on it. You should be able to run Ubuntu 10.04 if you want to, as I have run it on a 800MHz celeron with 12GB HDD and 128MB RAM I think, in a Thinkpad A20m lappy.

Quite surprisingly this baby can handle a gig of Ram ,
