HP Pavilion DV7-6c27cl Brightness Control Problem

I am having a problem with my HP Pavilion DV7-6c27cl laptop that I am hoping someone on this forum can help me out with. I have been facing this problem for about 2 months now and have tried everything I can think of to solve the issue.

The issue is that every so often the brightness controls (f2 and f3) stop working only when waking the computer from sleep. I normally never put my computer on hibernate or shut it down, so I doubt it does it booting it from either of those two. The brightness of the screen can still be changed in the control panel or by simply pressing the Windows key+x and manually adjusting it. This can be resolved temporarily either by restarting, which is annoying and somewhat time consuming, or by going to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Device Manager and then by selecting monitors, right clicking on "Generic PnP Monitor," uninstalling it and then going to "Action" and selecting "Scan for Hardware Changes." A lot of steps, I know, but it is much easier and quicker than restarting. You may think, "Well if that solves your issue, why are you complaining to us on here?" Well as I said that only temporarily solves a issue that really should be non-existent in the first place.

Anyways, after realizing that this didn't work, I went to the HP website and downloaded every driver and updated everything I possibly could. The one in particular that also only temporarily fixed the issue was the Intel High-Definition Graphics Driver. From my understanding and research, the graphics card is one of the things that controls the brightness controls and several other random functions of the laptop. This became apparent after I installed the new driver because this did fix the problem, but as I said, only for a short time period.

After this did not work, I went to the Intel website (considering this model comes with an i5 processor and a Intel HD 3000 Graphics card) and checked to see if everything was up to date there. Turned out the graphics card was out of date again, so after doing the same thing and having observed the same results in about a weeks time span, I didn't know what else to do. Also, let it be noted that among the slew of updates I installed from the HP site, a BIOS update or two was done with no improvement as far as my problem goes.

With all of this done and really no answers as to how to solve the problem by searching the web some more, I turned to the last thing I knew I could do, and that was a factory reset; or more specifically a Minimized Image Recovery. I did that about 2 days ago and throughout those two days I have been very pleased with the results until about two hours ago when the problem started up again. I don't know what else to do. I installed all of the updates that automatically popped up in the Control Panel (not that I didn't have all of them before the reset). I went back to the HP website and there are some updates available for download, but I am hesitant to do so considering I had all of them and more before I reset and none of them fixed the problem before, so I doubt they would now. I don't know what else I could possibly do. I have a warranty with HP until 2013, so if worst came to worst I could send it in and get it replaced, but that is time consuming and not to mention costly. Hopefully someone on here can help me out.

By the way, sorry for the long post. I just wanted to make sure everyone who reads this is up to date with where I am. I suppose I am going to go download the updates for my computer again considering I see one or two which might help with the problem. I will post my results after that. Meanwhile I would appreciate any and all help I can get on the issue!

Oh and if you need something like a list of computer specs or something, don't be afraid to ask!

Update: 6/26/12

I have installed the updates from HP and the ones that caught my attention were the HP Quick Launch Software, HP Unified Extensible Interface Support Environment, and most importantly the HP Software Framework. I installed them all and not one of them fixed the problem immediately after I installed, but I had to restart my computer for some of the others and as I mentioned before, restarting the computer fixes the issue, but normally just for a short time period. I put the computer on sleep and left it over night and the brightness controls are still working this morning so far. I guess I will remain optimistic that those updates fixed my laptop, but if they don't, I guess it is time to start utilizing my HP warranty....

This probably sounds stupid but anyway. Not sure if the HP's have this feature or if it's just Acer. Can you hold Fn and the right arrow key? That will turn the birghtness up.

Also, for next time; put a big post like that in paragraphs. It makes it a lot easier to read.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I don't think HP's have that feature considering it didn't work on mine or my dad's HP laptop. That was how you adjusted the brightness on my old Gateway though.

Sorry about the paragraphs. Your tip has been noted and the post has been fixed. :)

Just wondering, how did you get the 'Verified HP Representative' title under your username?

Once we verify a member is an actual representative of a company, Ian adds that under their username so members know.

OK thanks! After installing the updates the problem has not occurred since then. It is good to see a company keeping track of their customers and trying to help them out when they need it! Very impressive in my opinion these days. If the problem does decide to occur again, I will certainly contact you.

Thanks,

Nick
