Hello, I have had my HP Pavillion dv6810us (part of the dv6000) series since 2009 but i bought it from a friend who got it in 2007, making it 4 years old. It is running vista and just recently i have had my first problem.
I brought my laptop to a friends and i plugged it into his outlet to do my homework. I turned my computer on and it started up perfectly fine and normal i then proceeded to Microsoft Word to type up my English paper and randomly my screen flickered and turned black and then these random gray diagonal bars appeared. Then the bars turned horizontal and then they turned diagonal again and this time with some green bars . Finally they turned to box type things this is the cycle i refer to as "the light show".
After the light show i turned my computer off and right back on. it loaded fine and i went back to ms word and was stopped by the same problem, so i restarted and worked fine the rest of the night.
I went back home the next day and my computer worked perfectly fine for maybe a few days or up to a week, then the same thing happened; the cursed light show
I turned off my computer and then waited 10 secs and turned back on, I got to the HP welcome screen where you are able to see the start up options "F8 to .... F2 to...." etc. But then it did the light show before i could get any further into logging into my computer.
So i turned it off and waited 30 secs this time and turned on. I was immediately welcomed by the bars once again, frustrated i turned off my computer, unplugged it and took out the battery. I let it be with the battery and power cord out for about 3 mins and put the battery and cord back into my laptop. I tried to turn on my computer but new issues appeared.
Now my laptop would start to turn on and i could hear the fan and the disk drive start to go "Click...whirl...click" but then would shut off, the screen would just be black during this process which i call auto restart. It auto restarted several times and eventually turned on but only got to the HP screen and the light show reappeared.
I tried restarting and stuff a few times but didn't make any progress and by that time i was very frustrated and it was 11:00 at night so i unplugged it and took out the battery and let it sit over night and until i got home from school the next day. When i got home i tried turning it on but would now NEVER get to ANY loading screen, it would just keeping turning on and shutting itself off (auto restarting).
I put my laptop in my drawer and gave up on it until today (about 2 months later). I have done some research on these problems and found out a possible solution on this site:

i did what "Scrutinizer714" (top reply) said and was able to get to step 3 but when i tried holding esc and power button after step 3 i would get my laptop to turn on but it would just be a black screen. Eventually after about 5-7 tries i got the Bios screen but no booting up was happening so i played around with button and i hit all the "F1 F2 F3 F4..etc" buttons and it said "Setup Starting..." but i dont know what button got it to do that but it didnt matter because the setup never started so i hit ctrl + alt + delete and it shut off immediately and turned right back on and to my surprise it booted all the way and got to a black screen with white lettering that said "Windows has recovered from an error" <-- (not the exact words, but something like that). It gave me 2 options A.) Start normally or B.) Do system repairs.
Me hoping to fix my PC i selected the second option and took me to a blue screen with a single window that was a system repairer thing and it anylized my computer and said i had disk errors so it started fixing the errors and about 5 minutes through the expected hour process my screen gave me its famous light show so i turned off my computer and turned it back on. It did the auto restart so i tried the solution from the site again and again but i never got the bios screen, only black screens and computer humming. Sometimes i wouldnt get a black screen i would get the bars and sometimes it didnt work. Each time i would shut off and turn back on and it would give me the light show right away or it would say HP and then the light show, or even sometimes it would be completely black and 50% of the time it would just keep doing the auto restarting.
I let it to do the light show for whatever reason and let it sit for 3 mins on its final stage of the light show (the boxes). After 3 mins i turned off then back on and to my suprise it booted all the way to the "Windows has recovered from an error...etc..." screen. This time i hit start windows normally and it let me log in and everything. I could use my computer, use programs, use files, everything!
THE JIST OF IT....
My computer would have bars that would appear on screen when trying to turn on, sometimes it would auto restart, and sometimes it would just be a black screen (but computer was still on). I used this site http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-111507-hp-pavilion-dv6000-won-t-turn-on-black-screen and after several attempts and playing around with buttons i got it to a screen where i could perform system repairs but 3 mins through the process the screen turned black with the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. Many attempts and playing around later i got it to the screen where i could either do system repairs or start normally. This time i started normally and was able to get on my computer, use programs, use files, etc....
What i want to know is....why did this happen, how did it happen, how can i prevent it from happening, and while my computer is running what should i do to fix the issues? Is this internal or external? or any other helpful information and fixes for my situation...
Thank you so much for reading all that i didnt want to accidentaly leave out anything that might be important.
And thank you to those who will reply with help....
THANKS!!!!!
