HP pavillion lagging

I bought a HP Pavillion dv6449us just over a year ago. Now the problem started happening a few days ago. It takes about 6-7 minutes to boot up when before it took less than half that. It's also become a lot slower in general use. I can't browse the internet for more than a minute or two without the browser freezing up for about 10 seconds. If I'm navigating through windows the problem is the same; windows explorer just freezes temporarily and takes ages to load up folders and programs.
It's behaving as if it had high CPU load, but task manager tells me that it's close to idle pretty much all of the time. My memory's only 30%-40% full so i dont think that's it either.
I'm thinking maybe it could be a hard drive problem?

Incidentally, I do remember accidentally cutting the power to the laptop while it was shutting down. It was (not immediately) after that, that the problem started. Is it possible that could have caused it?

Thanks for any help.

Might be the hard drive.Hard to say.Easy thing to do is just buy another HD and install the OS.They are cheap enough.Get a external drive for your HD and copy all of your old files to the new HD via the USB port.
If you want the hard method.

I would suggest running CCLEANER and all of its tools.Cut out everything you don't absolutely need on start up.As a general rule only thing you need on start up is your antivirus.

Couple of other tools to use would be Adware and spybot.Be sure to immunize spybot.

Also run the Nortons extraction tool and the Mcefee tool. Those little bastages hide in files and eat up recorces.INstall avast and run it.
