Hello,
i was recently given a HP Proliant DL380 Gen 4. I wish to make it into a desktop for 3D drawing "Solid Works" the program uses WINDOWS 7 so i will need to change the OS to windows and was wondering whats involved?? The server has 12GB of RAM. i believe i will need to change the graphics card, whats involved in doing so??? and is it required??
Thanks for any advice.

I'm not even sure if the DL380 supports Windows 7 and I don't think you can put graphics cards in servers, or at least not in this one - especially since the DL380 is a rack server so it is thin so a GPU wouldn't even physically fit (in other words, a server is not an ideal workstation!)

It does have pci express risers but a rack server isn't meant to do what you want it to do. I know you are trying to save money but you need to do it the right way and just buy the right desktop pc to do what you want.

That thing is old. Does it even have pcie? The documentation I've seen indicates it has PCI-X instead, which doesn't have any compatible gaming GPUs.

While it's true you can 'install and launch games' on a server, the amount of times that it's the best solution rapidly approaches 0
