I am trying to install the software for my HP 3500C Series scanner. When I choose my install options (typical), I press install, and it immidiately says:
---------------------------------------------
Error

System can not find the file specified
----------------------------------------------

The comp is an etower 600is, windows me, and i'm trying to install this off a CD rom. I worked for me when I installed it last year, but it's not working for me right now. Anyone know whats up.

Thanks,

You will probably be better off going to the add/remove hardware option in the Control Panel to manually select the device to install. There you will then browse the cd until Windows detects and copies the correct drivers. This was a typical problem with the older FAT32 OSes. ME unfortunately was also labeled Microsoft's flop for an operating system. Apparently the auto setup method is failing to be recognised by Windows at this point.

If the current installation is a year old or longer the intergrity of system files can also have a role. Generally a wipe of the installation was needed at least yearly to have a good running system even sooner with FAT if you have made a large number of program installations and removals. The system registry gets cluttered. A freeware for cleanup of the 9X-ME family of Windows as well as 2000 and XP is called RegCleaner. This can help at times as well as running the system file checker utility included in Windows since 98. You can download RegCleaner free at |MG| Free Download - RegCleaner 4.3.0.780

Even when I do it manually, by using ADD/REMOVE HARDWARE, it still gives me the same error message when trying to install drivers. BTW, i think the scanner needs the scanning utility or whatever (the program where it shows the image that was scanned), and I think the only way I can install that is by using the disk. If i just install drivers, won't it still need the program to view scanned images?

You would have thought they could tell you which file it cannot find. That is such a stupid error message.

Is there any damage to the cd? Look at the cd in Explorer to make sure it is reading properly. You could also try running the setup.exe (or similar) from within Explorer to see if you get the same problem.

If the software disk isn't scratched up or blurred from handling you may have a bad disk. Once in awhile you'll see that. Try disabling any antivirus or firewall programs. Those can hamper installations at times.
