HP Startup times

I got an HP6775 (3GB DDR, 1.66 GHz, 250 GB HD etc.) I think it's decent, but startup seems to take really long. I enter this password, and a black screen comes up and stays for at least 45 sec. Is this a normal situation? Is there anything i can do to speed it up?(Without installing XP)
 
Black screen? First off go to start and in the search bar and type msconfig. Go to the startup tab and uncheck stuff you dont want to open on startup. Prob like the hp help center and anything hp related. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall any hp programs that you wont use.
 
I'm guessing it has Vista? I'm also stuck with the problem my where my HP laptop takes 3-4 minutes to be ready even after a defrag/cleanup/virus scan. An answer would be useful to me as well.
 
Wow!! My hp takes about 10sec or less with sidebar on startup and using vista!! If it is really slow you could disable the sidebar in your startup as it takes alot of the startup. Have you guys tried using a flash drive for readyboost? They really help alot. Have you tried going to the hp website and doing a bios update?
 
Nope, mainly because I'm scared of bricking it if it goes wrong, all of my school work is on there so if it goes wrong I've had it.
 
How is readyboost gonna screw anything up? All you do is right click the flash drive and set it to how much you wanna use. Thats it. And for the sidebar all you have to do is right click on the icon on the taskbar and go to properties or settings and uncheck the start on startup.
 
Readyboost won't help if he already has 3gb of ram. The black screen after you type in the password should only be up for less than a second. Try tweaking your startup programs in msconfig. I have a feeling it's a deeper problem though, cause 45 seconds is pretty rediculous. Try cleaning your registry with ccleaner, or windows live onecare.
If all else fails, I'd say you have a glitchy install of windows in which case try restoring it or even reformatting it.
 
True! Skipped over the part were he said he had 3gb ram. Oops. Im running 2gb stock clocked ram and have a 2gb flash drive and set on 1gb for readyboost and WOW!! Readyboost actually helps and esp when I leave the sidebar on startup.
 
Mine takes a while...I have to wait about 60 or 90 seconds after seeing the desktop to start using it or it will lock up. I think Vista just takes a minute or two to get its stuff together. Has it always done this? Maybe you have a spyware issue. Note that if you install XP on your HP laptop your video, sound, and wireless drivers are on your hard drive and HP doesn't provide a utility to obtain those drivers back. Read this post before installing XP...

Wow!! Why are all of your pc's so slow? Mine has almost instant access when the desktop appears and my pc isnt even considered top of the line! You guys have serious issues with keeping your pc's clean if you had to revert back to xp b/c it was so slow!! My pc runs great and I keep it clean. Do virus scans, check msconfig, ccleaner, disk defrag, disk check, and hijackthis regularly!! I delete temp files and do a registry cleaner every day atleast once a day. You guys have to do alot more and cant expect your pc to just be fast with good hardware. Sofware is the key to a fast pc and changing to xp is not gonna give you that big of a gain!
 
I'm with g25racer on this one, I've run Vista on lower end systems and it doesn't take long to start up. You just have to optimize it and keep it clean.
 
Exactly!! My pc runs faster than my mom's and she is running xp and does not download anthying and I have downloaded over 190gb in 3months. That pretty much tells you that im a freak when it comes to clean pc's yet really good media!! I love Vista and would not go back even if someone were to pay me for it!! I have made my pc fast by doing a couple of registry tweaks which i dont recommend unless you really know your ins and outs of regedit. Heres a couple links to some tweaks to make vista fly!!

Thing is that I've tried to optimise it with only limited results, I'm getting recovery disks though so that may improve matters, or I could install Linux if I really get fed up.
 
I dont recommend linux as most programs wont work with it! Can't you make you own recovery disks? I did with the free hp tool.
 
as for having a clean computer? well it has been slow since right after i ran recovery.
Reformat? would it be possible to do this if i have only very basic knowledge of computers?
 
Just FYI, my previous HP had horrendous startup times, even after I cleaned the startup quite a bit. Just recently, I began using my grandparents Compaq (basically the same age/same laptop as my HP) It had pretty poor startup times. However, since I made my own account, times seem to have dramatically decreased.

So, try making another user account. Oh, and I've been getting some HP Assistant error. I've not taken the time to check it out, but perhaps this thing not loading is causing boot times to speed up?
 
Your hp probably had some crappy processor or something b/c my hp is super fast and im only running a 2.6ghz dual core with 2gb ram. You probably had a virus or something b/c even with all the hp stuff on my startup my pc is still fast.
 
But it's a core 2 duo, right? My Core 2 duo is only 1.73ghz, but it still starts up very fast. clock speed isn't near as revelent nowadays
