HP vs. DELL

Which one is good?
HP ENVY 17 or DELL XPS 17.
Both will come under my budget of 2000$. If you think there is a better laptop than those don't hesitate to reply. I need a laptop for Gaming, surfing the internet, for work (so don't suggest Alienware), 15 inch or 17 inch screen.
Is over-clocking possible in these laptops?

Dells are typically more reliable than HP.

I doubt there'll be overclocking on them, though some Alienware ones allow it.

I'd recommend looking into Asus. They typically have very good performance for the price, and their build quality (and warranty) is awesome. Beats the poo out of Dell and HP, for sure. Some of their Republic of Gamers laptops actually do allow overclocking. The G73 and G53 in particular are beasts, but their battery life kind of sucks since they have quad cores and high-end GPU's. They also look like something alienware would make. (except higher quality :/ )

Even for $2000, it's hard to find higher-spec'd machines than those.

But will it surely work more than 5 years, I won't be over-using it, mostly for work, I could use my Desktop later for Gaming.

Depends on the model. I has a $2k Dell XPS that failed after 2 years due to a design flaw, courtesy of Dell. Out of warranty, naturally, so it's sitting in my room dead right now.

Laptops in general are not particularly reliable machines...at 5 years you're pretty much on borrowed time with most of them.

Well everyone in the forum recommend ASUS, as it is known for its quality, should I go for ASUS only?

The higher end Asus that Drenlin linked to over HP and Dell -- yes, absolutely. Lenovo's Thinkpad T series is also quite well built. Not sure about the graphic options but their build quality is excellent.

HP and Dell are both trash if you ask me. If you buy HP only buy their business class laptops, they are actually really good. Their consumer level stuff sucks.

Dell just rebrands hardware from the lowest bidder to maximize profits which is why they are able to sell hardware very cheap compared to competitors, it also means you are most likely getting an inferior machine.

HP actually designs their systems and has a manufacturer make them. Last time I worked extensively on HPs they had ASUS parts in them.

i dont know about dell, but hp customer service is bad

however, i would get the envy over the xps. i looked at an xps today and it was just downright ugly

envy are nice looking, thin, and good performers

I agree the ASUS is the right choice the G73HJ is now being replaced by the G73GW and the price is around$800US lower then the new one. But the HJ still is a great laptop. It's not small but it sure is nice.:)

I may be going for G53Jw or G73Jw. The difference between the two is that 53 has 15 inch screen and 17 inch screen.

I stay in India, I haven't purchased anything online ever. Do you know where I can get it online?

I don't know about the importing laws and their costs are on buying online from outside India. also if the laptop arrived damaged that might be a big problem getting it replaced.

I am sure ASUS is sold in India so I highly advise you to try buying a G73 from a local dealer.;)

Should be in here somewhere:
http://in.asus.com/

Use the link Drenlin posted. click on the where to buy on the bottom of the page, there are some email address you can ask where to get them. According to the telephone numbers, seem like they are from Asia country, maybe India. give them a call or email them.
cheers.
