Hi,,
I have a unusual problem with this laptop

The screen comes on shortly then it gets really black really quick.You can hook up a external monitor and it looks normal.

Its like there is a dimmer switch that needs to be turned up.

I tried re-install of the OS and drivers and that did not help.

There is usually a button combination that you can press to turn the backlight on or off. Maybe you pressed that accidentally?

One of your function keys (f1, f2 etc) probably has LCD or a screen on it. All you need to do if thats your problem is to hold the FN key and press the right function key. Also, you can look for brightness keys (but they vary in design from laptop to laptop).

Also check the power settings of your laptop (in windows and any HP utilities). It may be in battery save or something, which usually turns the backlight down if not off.
