hey everyone ! First post and it looks like I found the perfect site for my needs !

Im very green when it comes to computers, I know my way around them, but to say how they work and go together and whats compatable with what.... I have no clue !
SO.... heres the scenario....
I currently have a desktop Pc that i bought from Futureshop.... its approx 3 yrs old now. Dont ask me the specs, I dont know them ! haha
I have found that I use it mostly for watching DVDs, going on the net ( you tube, facebook, and music sites ) other then that...not much else!
I am moving back home for a little while to save some money. I want to make a pretty sweet entertainment unit in my room so I can have a spot to myself to watch tv and movies with the GF and what not !

I will be hooking the HTPC to a 54" Samsung Plasma... 1080P... I also have a "Bose" 5.1 surround sound system and receiver ( cant think of the brand of that right now ) that i want to play the sound through.
@ the moment, there is no budget.... but I would think somewhere around $1000 when its all said and done.... if Im to low with that figure for what I want to do with it, then I will have to adjust.

What I want to be able to do :
- Watch and burn Blu ray/regular DVD movies ( I have a small collection I would like to rip onto a HD to save some space in my room) i would like to be able to watch all my current DVD/Blu rays right from my computer ...
- watch and record TV... If possible, I want HD channels ??? I have no idea how TV tuners work
- I will be using it for pictures and small home movies ( i fish alot so i have lots of them )
- I want to be able to use it as a personnal computer as well... email, net, you tube, net flix , etc.....
- I cant think of anything else at the moment... but those are the main points.

If anyone can suggest the components I would need for this build or any suggestions I would REALLY appreciate it ! I have tried to study it myself... but its very over whelming.... capatability between components are the main thing !

thanks very much !!

Here's a quick list.

It will be able to:
-Play 1080P video without trouble
-Hook up to your receiver via digital optical or analog
-Play blu ray
-watch and record HD channels
-work well as a regular PC, plenty of power for that
-look good sitting under your TV, and will be pretty quiet too

I would suggest i3-550 instead of i5-650 which is $50 cheaper, and only difference is that i3-550 lacks turbo boost

Thanks for the heads up on the CPU

couple questions.... whats 64 bit ???? hahah and what about multi tasking ??? will i be able to surf the net while watching TV ? or Blu ray ???

Quick Question: With that TV tuner, should he be able to run the Coaxial right into the tuner card, or would there need to be a cable box or something before the signal gets to the card?

Depends, he'll probably need to run it through the cable box and then into the tuner. If he used antenna for over the air channel it'll work without any boxes in the middle.
