well i was going to come on and start flaming my dad and stupid stuff like that but i decided to take a reasonable aproach. here is the story

Earlier this year i was looking into buying a computer Then i ran into this forum and relized it was cheaper to build my own. so i ask my dad if i can build myself a computer and he says you need to bring your grades up to A's and B's and i said "Yes Sir". So my last grading period my grades were A's and B's so the last week or so i have been aranging my build on newegg. this morning i have it just right i go down stairs to ask him if i can order and he starts to give me this whole talk about how my grades werent good enough and i was like wtf i made A's and B's my last grading period. he was like no its your yearly average that matters and i was like thats bull shit thats not waht you said earlier this year. then he was like well it will distract you from school work next year. so i said take it away next year untill my grades are good then he was like this conversation is over.

how can i convince him??? please help!!

agian sorry if i rambled i do that alot when im pissed off

Parents can be very unyielding when it comes to splashing out a lot of money on what he may see as nothing more than a hobby. What you could try is convincing him of all the use you'll be able to get out of it, as well as the benefit you'll get from it as a resource for school-work via the internet. Plus you can suggest it'd help give you valuable hardware knowledge that could be used in a future career in the computing industry (which can be well paid). Your father will be seeing it currently as a distraction from his idea of what your schooling should be. In a nutshell, what you'd need to do is to convince him that it'd not be a distraction, but an enhancement.

Hope this helps.

Don't you have a computer right now? If so, how would a new computer distract you from your school work next year...unless you start playing games day and night. With my parents the issue has always been about money, I mean who doesn't have a decent computer now days. Try to convince your dad that your new computer will benefit your studies, research, etc. Hope that helps! Good Luck

The computer i am currently using is a loptop from 97 that has 128mb of ram and for some dumbass reason he put XP on it so it runs slower than hell and freezes every 10 minutes
i got it taken away during school and it cant play games

first off, who's paying for it, if it was originally him try to convince him by saying you will buy it out of your own money, or save up for it, or put 50% towards it
Try to convince him how it will help you with schoolwork, and if it woudl only be you hwo was to use it say you could spend more time studying, and leave the other computer free for other people to use. And tell him that it would be money well spent, as you would take full advantage of all the latest hardware and software ;)

Hopefully you'll get that computer, i knwo how annoying parent's can be at times, mine are the same

edit: just read about it being from 97! good god that's old, what kind of stuff do you do at school? if you do any ICT stuff that needs image editing, or web design tell him that you need it to do some of the work in home, as the old laptop cannot run it, and you don't want to risk getting behind with work that you are unable to do at home, or something along those lines ;)

Also what is the computer you are proposing to build, how much is the total cost of it?

My dad was hesitant because he thought it wouldn't work.

dunno what you should do though. is it your money? if so...

would you be allowed to buy it if it was cheaper? maybe just get 1 gig of ram and use the integrated sound for now, that could probably reduce the cost by almost $200, and if you were prepared you could probably save money elsewhere, and then save up the money for the extra gig and sound cards in the future, or have them for xmas
