Hey, My HD is producing a VERY high pitched HUM noise. Everything is still working great and i'm not seeing any glitches. Just very loud and annoying >.< I'm thinking about going and buying an external HD and x-fering all of my data and buying a new HD. The HD that I have isn't very old tho. Any ideas on what it could be or how I could get it to stop before I go out and spend 200.00?

You should run the manufacturer's diagnostic program to see if anything is wrong with it or temperature too high (if that is monitored). Check the mounting screws for the drive are tight. Is it definitely the drive and not some nearby part resonating? Is it making a noise all the time or only when it is supposed to be doing something? Is it well-defragged or is it having a hard time finding fragments? Connections tight?

I'm not 100% it's the drive. Only other thing that it could be would be my Video card. I don't think it's that tho. I just defragged it. I also ran to make sure everything on the HDD is working good. All the screws are tight. It really only happens when my computer is in "hibernate" mode. And I think when that is happening isn't the video-card shut down for the most part? I'm not too worried about it tho. I did just find out that my HDD has a 5 year warranty. I found a couple 500gb External HDD's that I might get. Been meaning to get one anyways. Right now i'm using a replacement Video-Card waiting for my expensive one to get back from warranty. I'll swap em out and check to see if the noise persists. If it does then i'm sure it's the video-card.

One way to locate the source of noise is to take the cardboard centre of a toilet roll or paper towel roll, stick it to your ear and point the other end to locate the noise source. Don't you like to play doctor?
My preference is the paper towel roll; it's the thought of where the other option has been sitting for the past few weeks!
If it's occurring in hibernate it can't be anything moving because the PC is basically shut down. The only power to the works is the 5V standby. I would have thought the power supply would be the most likely source. Perhaps the sound is occurring normally but you can't hear it above the running PC. Going back to playing doctor, you don't have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) by any chance?

And i'll try the cardboard trick when I hear the sound again. Thanks for your help everyone.The noise must be coming from the transformer or the voltage regulation of the 5V standby voltage. I can't think of a way to fix it, I don't know enough about PSU design. From what I can remember, chopping circuits like PWM voltage regulators produce odd harmonics from the squared pulses which can be very annoying. It could be that you have exceptional hearing or a component is on the way out. I suspect the noise is always there; it's drowned out by other noises when the PC is running.
You should get someone else to listen. If you have any doubts, replace the PSU. If the PC is not a critical item, live with the buzz.
