Hybrid Hard Drives

There are a few links that explain what they are and how they work. The supersized onboard cache will be a plus since you will see faster drives using less power and even drive platters taking brief rest stops since the 1gb or so onboard cache will hold larger amounts of data there.

The best description is seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_drive As far as articles about them most of those like the one at the link here came out last May. http://www.engadget.com/2005/04/25/samsung-and-microsoft-introduce-hybrid-hard-drive-hhd/

"Hybrid drives are set to be released, primarily for notebook computers, in early 2007, with Samsung introducing their first drives in January, and Seagate in the first three months."

I saw tht. However, its the middle of february and i still dont see anything about them on websites for pre-orders or any new info on them.

That sucks. I was hoping to buy one soon. Guess it will have to wait. Either way, they will probably cost a lot when they come out anyway. Guess i'll just wait a while. maybe in a few months - a yr? Guess ill just go ut and buy a sata drive for now.

I just put in a 500gb sata drive for storage and ended up installing XP Pro onto it since Vista wouldn't install to a second partition on an ide drive. Apparently Vista(retail) needs the entire drive for itself. ggrrrr... typical MS there.

I couldn't get anywhere trying to get it to install to the 2nd partition with XP Pro on the first at the time. The installer simply sat there. Eventually I said forget it and replaced Pro with since the new sata drive was available. I had planned to use that strictly for storage or leave some room for a Linux distro or two. Foobar! is what I said to that. XP Pro found a new home. grrrr...
