hyperthreading?

In regards to the below listed processor, will this work in a dell dimension 2400 which currently has a 2.4ghz processor in it? what confuses me is the "hyper-threading" part...

It's like , a faux-dual core... like a hypothetical second core.. it's a single core chip, but will run as two pretty much...

I'm actually not familiar with Dell motherboards, so i do not know about they're capabilities on HTT support.

....thanks for the reply...i am really no farther ahead then when i started:D..i looked at the specs on my dell but, not sure what i am looking at...in effect, if my computer's max size procesor is 3.2 and it currently has a 2.4, regardless if the "new" processor is 3.2, would it work as a 3.2 processor?
 
Well... what mobo do you have? Get CPU-Z, it will tell you. Knowing your motherboard/chipset make/model makes it so much easier for us to figure out whether it supports HT or not.

.....not possible at this time as i bought the computer as a present for someone whom didn't have one and shipped it out...it is currently in another state where i will be in a month or so on vacation........
 
well if the max is 3.2ghz i'm assuming you're okay, considering the only Pentium 4's with HT were for the same type of motherboards, so if it says it will take up to 3.2ghz i'd try it, if not, you can always RMA

....thanks for the reply......not possible as the processor will be a used one. at any rate, according to dell i think i remember them saying the max for the aformentioned computer is a 3.2 celeron.
 
Dont worry about HTT. Its almost useless and offers very little perfomance difference (at least from my experience). If the motherboard supports it then yay, if not it will just be auto disabled on the cpu.

No such thing as a motherboard being max 3.2 "celeron". It would just be 3.2ghz, no celeron needed as 3.2ghz is 3.2ghz regardless of processor (Intel that is.).

And honestly i dont think its the 3.2ghz its referring to, im pretty sure its basing that off the core FSB. Which if so the cpu will default to whatever the motherboard is made for.

***now that i think of it, i think it was this forum that told me that the maxinum speed processor that my motherboard would take was a 3.2ghz processor and if i used another type, it would be a little less.....that is where i came up with my previous statement.

***see above statement....however, as long as it will work, i have no problems if it works as "stock" or "hyper-threading"...
