I accidentally modified my RAM

I was messing around with my machine and bent the heatsink on one of my OCZ reaper ram chips.

So I decided to open it up and remove the whole thing, screwed it back together...did the other 2GB chip...and it runs just the same ...LOL

..on an unrelated matter, does anyone need scrap copper?:eek:

You were fortunate not to have zapped the dimm when handling it for removing the bent heat shield. Too bad you simply didn't restraighten it for continued use. No one here will want a bent up one when they get one in spotless condition simply when ordering new memory. You're stuck there wiith it! :P

Haa...well obviously I wouldn't sell anyone a mangled ram chip...

I'm just posting on how funny it is that they work still..

The memory doesn't seem to have suffered any damage and will work while the heat shield is just that a piece of copper added on to help defect heat from the dimm itself. You were simply fortunate enough that was the only damage seen while that particular dimm will still work while being a little bit warmer without the shield on.

("gee? time for a memory cooler?" "I couldn't say. but that might help.")

I put the black metal casing back on the chips..its the huge heatsinks the are completely removed so they still look cool..kinda..lol

The important thing to remember is you didn't end up zapping the memory while handling it and it seems to be working well. If you should have any worries run memtest some time just see if that comes up with any errors. It likely won't but at least you will know.

I think he does, I've seen him post pictures of himself before;

Aren't those delicate fins so much fun to work with?! :P As long as it will still go on it will still work since heat will still be drawn off of the dimm itself. The only thing that really suffers is appearance.

Well for planning a new build and wanting to sell the used hardwares off once that is up and running appearance might come into play while you would simply state the fins had a simple accident while the dimms are still fine. Simple as that!

hey i'll trade you my 2 gigs of reaper memory for your 4 gigs of reaper memory with the broken heatsinks!

they clock to 1150mhz, easily enough lol and run ddr800 at 3-4-4-12 1t so whadaya say? :D
