My name is Sue and I am new to this forum and wanted to say Hi. I just purchased my first laptop and need to ask questions but don't know where to post them. I am trying to get my Outlook Express email folders from my desktop to my laptop. I got as far as getting them on to a CD and put them in the Outlook Express folder but they are not showing up when I open up Outlook Express. I must be missing a step. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP Pro. I would appreciate any help.

it isn't a matter of moving the messages, the laptop needs to connect to the mail server because that's where the messages are stored. So whoever set it up on the desktop should be able to set it up on the laptop. It takes a lot of information to set up, especially if it's a mail server for your workplace or something.

That would depend on if its and IMAP or POP3 setup. I would assume this is a POP3 (ie messages stored on computer rather than server) if she is trying to move the messages from computer to laptop.

What type of files are they or how did you put the messages on CD?
 
first off, are you trying to move all of your exsisting mail (stuff you've already received) so that your laptop and your Desktop mailboxes are mirror images?

Or are you trying to set up the same mail account on the laptop as on the desktop so you can read your new mail from either location?

I am trying to move all of my exsisting email folders and email messages so that they are mirror images. I already have Outlook Express set up but just need to finish the process. I hope this makes sense.

yep, that article covers it.

One thing I would also do if I were you is to make the program leave the messages on the server for a day or two.

If you look in the options you will find an option that says "leave messages on server for:" and then a box for the number or days. Set this to 2 or 3 days. That way when you get a message and you receive it on your desktop, a copy stays on the server, so when you link up with your laptop, you get a copy too.

It just makes sure that you don't have to keep track of which computer which e-mail message is on, so both of your inboxes will be identical.
 
Open Outlook Express on your desktop. Use the Export function (make note of where you are saving the file). Copy that file to CD or whatever & take it to the laptop.

Open Outlook Express on the laptop. Use the Import function & locate the file you created. That should do it.
